This e-book introduces NEMO, a therapeutic tool designed for therapists seeking a straightforward and effective method to help clients overcome deep-seated emotional issues that may have been holding them back for years – in just one session.
Whether you're a seasoned therapist or just beginning your journey, this book is designed to enhance your understanding and application of emotional cleansing.
Who Am I ?
Hi, I’m Ienke Keijzer. For many years, I have been passionate about helping people free themselves from disproportionate emotional reactivities and phobias.
Throughout my work as a therapist, I experienced that even the most insightful more traditional approaches sometimes struggle to truly free clients from deep-seated emotional reactions. I wanted a method that was simple, natural, and effective – and that therapists could easily integrate into their practice.
This led to the creation of NEMO Emotional Cleansing: an effective tool to help clients overcome phobias and excessive emotional reactivities, rapidly and with lasting results.
Why a New Approach Was Needed
Fear, anxiety, phobias and overwhelming emotional reactivity can seriously limit our clients’ quality of life – especially when they consciously know their fears are irrational. Insights alone are not enough to change deep emotional responses.
As therapists, we know that these emotional issues can be challenging to address. Traditional methods can feel slow, often leaving both clients and therapists feeling frustrated or stuck.
That’s why I searched for a way to work with the brain’s natural healing capacities – instead of only relying on words, logic, or long exposure therapies.
The NEMO Emotional Cleansing method was born from this need for a gentler, faster and more natural way to help clients heal.
The Good News: The Brain’s Natural Heiling Power
The brain has an incredible capacity to heal itself. And we are now able to get the process started!
Over the years, research in neuroplasticity and trauma has shown us that the brain can reorganize itself to overcome old patterns, even those rooted deeply in past, unknow, trauma. This is not just an idea – it’s science. The brain, in its own way, can rewire itself much faster and more effectively that we once believed.
The NEMO method emerged from a combination of techniques that tap into the brain’s ability to release stored sensations tied to deep, most often subconscious traumas. By allowing the body to unwind these sensations naturally, clients can achieve lasting emotional freedom, often within just one session.
This e-book
In this eBook, you’ll gain insights into the NEMO method and how to integrate it into your own practice, offering clients a fresh path to healing. You’ll learn the mechanisms behind NEMO, discover its effectiveness, and see how you can start applying it right away to make your therapeutic sessions more transformative.
So, let’s begin this journey together, opening doors to breakthroughs that are both real and lasting.
Chapter 1: Understanding Phobias and Emotional Reactivity
Phobias and disproportionate emotional reactivity go beyond mere emotional reactions — they are deeply ingrained responses, rooted in both mind and body. To provide meaningful help, it’s essential to first understand the nature of these issues and the mechanisms driving them.
What is a Phobia?
A phobia is an irrational and persistent fear tied to specific objects, situations, or activities. Unlike generalized anxiety, which is a natural response to stress, phobias provoke excessive, uncontrollable emotional reactions that can lead to intense emotional and physical symptoms - sweating, racing heartbeats, even panic attacks.
Common phobias include fears of snakes, pigeons, vomit, elevators, syringes, blood, hospitals, heights. While these fears may seem irrational to outsiders, they are often rooted in deeper, unknown traumas, and the client’s physical and emotional responses are very real and intense.
Disproportionate emotional reactivity refers to strong, often uncontrollable emotional responses to triggers that seem out of proportion to the situation at hand. This might appear as public-speaking fear, debilitating shyness, extreme jealousy, difficulty saying no, or chronic procrastination.
Clients with heightened emotional reactivity often feel trapped on an emotional rollercoaster, where even minor stimuli trigger overwhelming emotions like anger, sadness, anxiety, or fear. Despite knowing their response is excessive, they struggle to control it.
=> Both phobic and disproportionate emotional reactivities are most often tied to unresolved, unrecognized traumas and ingrained emotional patterns. Once a trigger is activated, logical reasoning is bypassed, leaving the client feeling helpless and out of control.
For example, a client with a spider phobia, upon seeing this little eight-legged animal, has their brain quickly associate this situation with a past (unknown) experience that felt life-threatening, triggering an immediate surge of fear or panic. This reaction bypasses conscious thought and reflects encoded memory.
As therapists, recognizing that these patterns are not purely psychological is vital. The brain is wired in ways that traditional talk therapy may not fully address nor release. And this is where the NEMO method comes in: by targeting the (unknown) root components of the emotional responses, it offers a pathway for clients to achieve lasting relief.
Why Traditional Approaches Often Fall Short
Traditional therapeutic approaches tend to focus on addressing a client’s thoughts and beliefs. While surely helpful, they often don’t reach the root causes of phobias and overwhelming emotional reactivities.
For example, a client with a phobia may intellectually understand that their fear is irrational, yet this insight alone doesn’t stop their automatic overwhelming emotional response when faced with the trigger.
Chapter 2: The NEMO Method—A Breakthrough in Emotional Cleansing
NEMO Emotional Cleansing is a simple, yet powerful method that helps clients quickly and effectively overcome phobias, emotional reactivity and other deeply held emotional blocks.
The NEMO method is grounded in the latest neuroscience and trauma-informed therapy research. Studies on the brain-body connection reveal that emotional responses are not purely psychological; they are linked to somatic memories with a negative emotional charge. These memories, whether consciously recognized or not, are stored in the brain, and triggered by specific cues, they set off automatic responses to perceived threats.
NEMO transcends cognitive insights and addresses the somatic memories and sensations stored in the body and leverages the brain’s natural mechanisms to process and release stored (unrecognized) trauma, achieving rapid and permanent resolutions of these patterns.
NEMO stands for the French Nettoyage EMOtionnel, or Emotional Cleansing in English. The name reflects the core of the method: rather than suppressing or avoiding emotions, NEMO enables clients to release these deep-rooted reactions entirely, generally in just one session, thus reprogramming the maladaptive neural connections that cause the intense, irrational emotional reactions.
This approach involves a safe, guided process where the emotional response is briefly activated, without overwhelming the client, allowing the work on the underlying somatic memory. From there, the therapist facilitates the brain’s natural cleansing mechanism, called the catharsis, helping the brain and body process the stored memory and release its emotional charge.
Main Advantages of Using NEMO
There are several reasons why NEMO stands out as an incredibly effective tool for therapists:
1) Simplicity and Speed
NEMO works quickly. In just a few moments, one session, clients can experience lasting deep emotional relief.
2) Non-Invasive and Gentle
NEMO doesn’t rely on invasive or overwhelming techniques. Instead, it taps into the brain’s natural healing ability, creating a safe and nurturing space for emotional release.
3) Effective for a Wide Range of Emotional Challenges
NEMO is highly versatile. Whether your clients are dealing with phobias, trauma, anxiety, or chronic emotional reactions, this method can help them find freedom and lasting peace.
4) Lasting Results
The power of NEMO lies in its ability to address the roots of emotional disturbances rather than managing symptoms. By eliminating the negative charge of traumatic memories, and working with the brain’s natural cleansing processes, the triggers for these emotional responses dissolve, leading to lasting change, without the need for constant follow-up sessions.
5) Accessible and Easy to Learn for Therapists
NEMO is designed to be easy to integrate into any therapeutic practice. Whether you are a seasoned therapist of new to this type of method, NEMO is straightforward to learn and implement. You don’t need to master complex techniques or theories – just a simple, effective approach to creating lasting change.

One client, who was overwhelmed by a sudden panic attack at the airport, contacted me in distress. Using NEMO ‘à chaud’ protocol in real-time, we effectively interrupted her panic response. She was able to board her flight with a newfound sense of calm – a breakthrough moment that has since enabled her to travel confidently.”

Chapter 4: Implementing the NEMO
One of the most impactful aspects of NEMO is the NEMO à chaud protocol, which helps therapists release intense emotions during a session in real-time. The term “à chaud” is French for applying the technique while emotional reactivity is actively occurring - in the heat of the moment. This protocol is particularly useful for addressing panic attacks, anxiety, or other emotionally charged situations.
Overcoming a phobia in 5 steps with NEMO à chaud :
1. Recognize the Trigger:
Use the NEMO “à chaud” protocol whenever a phobia or intense emotional reaction is triggered.
2. Encourage Focus on Physical Sensations:
Ask the client to close their eyes to concentrate fully on their internal sensations.
3. Guide Attention to Sensations in the Body:
Guide your client to focus deeply on all the bodily sensations they are experiencing.
4. Allow the Sensations to Evolve Naturally:
Encourage the client to let these sensations flow and evolve without attempting to change or control them.
5. End the Process:
When there are no more sensations present, the client can open their eyes. You can now check the result by assessing the intensity of their emotion again.
=> This straightforward method benefits greatly from your guidance.
=> Make sure the unwinding of sensations reaches completion to ensure lasting effects, as unfinished processing can lead to only temporary relief.
=> Enjoy trying the tool NEMO à chaud, and I’d love to hear about your experiences as you experiment with NEMO “à chaud” in your practice.
Tips for effective implementation
• Tailor Techniques to Individual Needs:
Personalize your accompaniment based on each client’s unique responses and preferences.
• Foster Collaboration:
Teamwork between you and your client enhances the session’s success.
• Provide Continuous Support:
Be ready to offer support, as NEMO can be intense and may bring up challenging sensations. Ensure they feel supported throughout the session.
• Encourage Feedback:
Keep open channels for clients to share their thoughts about the techniques being used. Their insights can be invaluable in fine-tuning your way of practising.
Chapter 5: NEMO "À Froid"
The NEMO "à chaud" protocol offers immediate relief by addressing phobias and emotional reactivities in moments of heightened stress. However, the NEMO "à froid" approach is designed to address these challenges with a gentler touch, allowing clients to heal without being triggered or re-experiencing trauma.
Most clients are not actively triggered when they arrive for their therapy session, making the “à froid” protocol a highly efficient tool for regular practice. For clients with severe phobias or sensitivities, avoiding the reactivation of their phobia is crucial. This method provides profound healing in a safe, controlled way, bypassing the emotional distress often involved in traditional trauma-focused therapies.
For an in-dept understanding of this process, the complete NEMO training or the dedicated sections of the book NEMO Emotional Cleansing are recommended.

By integrating this innovative approach into your practice – both NEMO “à chaud” and NEMO “à froid” you’ll be able to facilitate profound changes in your clients' lives, empowering them to live lives free from phobias and overreactive emotional patterns.
